Why Etsy POD profit is easy to overestimate

An Etsy sale can include a listing fee, transaction fee, payment-processing fee, advertising charge, tax treatment, currency considerations, and the supplier's product and shipping costs. A seller who subtracts only the blank price from revenue is calculating markup, not profit.

Etsy's fees and Canadian regulatory charges can change. Use the live Etsy fee documentation and Canadian regulatory operating fee page as the source of truth, then model the current rates with our Etsy fee calculator.

Start with net order revenue

Record the item price and any shipping amount paid by the buyer. Then subtract discounts and refunds. Marketplace fees are often calculated on more than the headline item price, so enter the same components that appear in the Etsy payment account rather than estimating from memory.

Add the fulfillment side

Your POD cost includes the configured product, extra print locations, supplier shipping, and any tax the supplier charges you. Compare the same provider and SKU that the listing will use. If a network lets you switch providers, treat each provider as a separate cost and quality scenario.

Build a per-order worksheet

For every core listing, track:

  1. Revenue after seller-funded discount
  2. Etsy listing, transaction, processing, regulatory, and applicable advertising fees
  3. POD product and shipping charges
  4. Currency-conversion cost, if any
  5. Refund and remake allowance
  6. Contribution remaining for overhead, income tax, and owner pay

The remainder is a contribution margin, not necessarily final business profit. Software, samples, design assets, accounting, insurance, and marketing still exist outside an individual order.

Price three scenarios

Calculate the listing at full price, during the promotion you actually expect to run, and after a realistic cost increase. Also model an Offsite Ads order if your shop can incur that charge. A product is fragile when one common discount turns its contribution negative.

Supplier choice for Etsy

Printify is attractive when provider-level price selection is important. Printful can suit a more managed, brand-led workflow. Gelato is worth comparing for distributed production. All three support Etsy-oriented workflows according to the data in our supplier profiles, but the exact product, provider, and current integration should be verified before launch.

Canadian tax is separate from marketplace math

Marketplace collection and your own GST/HST obligations are related but not interchangeable. The CRA explains when businesses must register, including the small-supplier threshold tests, on its official GST/HST registration page. Get professional advice for your facts; this guide and calculator are planning tools, not tax advice.

Monthly reconciliation

At month end, compare Etsy deposits with order-level revenue, fees, refunds, and supplier charges. Differences reveal missed advertising fees, exchange effects, or replacement costs. Revisit pricing whenever a supplier, marketplace, shipping, or tax input changes.

Bottom line

Price from the complete transaction and keep a buffer for ordinary failures. Etsy can supply demand, but traffic is not valuable when the common promotional order leaves too little contribution to operate the business.
