How to prepare POD print files: size, resolution and sample checks

Start with the product, not a universal export preset

A shirt front, wraparound mug and framed print can need different files. Before exporting, open the exact product, variant and decoration method in your supplier's catalog. Save its current print-area dimensions, template and file requirements alongside your editable artwork. Repeat this check when changing provider, product or placement.

Treat this guide as a preparation workflow, not supplier approval. PODCanada has not tested your artwork or published a hands-on sample study. A numerical resolution check cannot establish colour accuracy, fabric feel, durability or your right to sell a design.

Calculate resolution at the size you will actually print

Pixel dimensions describe the image data available. PPI means pixels per inch at a chosen physical size; suppliers often call this DPI, although printer dots are a different measurement. Divide pixel width by print width in inches, and repeat for height. Convert centimetres to inches by dividing by 2.54.

For example, a 3000 × 4000 pixel image covers 10 × approximately 13.33 inches at 300 PPI. Printing that same image at 12 × 16 inches gives 250 PPI. These calculations describe available pixel density, not whether a particular product accepts the file.

Choose fit or fill deliberately

When the image and print area have different proportions, fitting the entire design leaves unused space along one dimension. Filling the area covers it but crops part of the image. Neither should stretch faces, logos or lettering out of proportion. Check the preview before treating a calculated size as your final placement.

For an all-over or edge-to-edge design, use the supplier's template to inspect bleed and safe zones. Do not invent a universal bleed allowance. Keep essential text and marks within the documented safe area, and remove template guide layers before exporting.

Match the supplier's requirement, then inspect the artwork

Printify generally recommends 300 DPI but documents lower requirements for some large products. Printful also makes resolution product-dependent. Use the exact product's current requirements instead of treating a calculator's default as a universal pass mark.

Changing a resolution tag or enlarging a raster image does not reliably recover missing detail. Inspect the original artwork for blur, compression, rough edges and tiny text. When it is insufficient, find a better original, rebuild the design or reduce its physical size.

• Confirm the accepted file format, colour profile and maximum file size for this product and method.
• Inspect backgrounds, transparency and fine effects against the chosen product colour.
• Keep the editable original and export a clearly named product-specific version.

Use a sample to check what the calculator cannot

Order the exact configuration you plan to sell when you are ready to pay for a sample. Save the uploaded file, placement preview, product identifier and provider. Inspect the delivered item against that record, including print placement, readable detail and appearance under ordinary lighting. Follow the product's care instructions for any wash or use check.

Record observations rather than declaring the whole supplier tested. One sample does not establish every colour, size or production route. If you change an important input later, review the file and sample decision again before expanding the listing.
